Title
President Henry Morton, Ph. D.
Description
Frontispiece of Biographical notice of Pres't Henry Morton, PH. D. showing a photographic reproduction of a painted portrait of Henry Morton (1836-1902). Morton was the first president of the Stevens Institute of Technology from 1870 until his death in 1902. The painting is described in the book's preface: "To the right is seen the blackboard, on which so many diagrams have been sketched to aid in explanations; to the left on the table stands the spectroscope with which were made the researches on the Fluorescent and Absorption Spectra of the Uranium salts... and also the Induction Coil... Below the table is the College Lantern, arranged by President Morton and for some time manufactured under his direct management. To the right and in the rear are seen the modification of Gassiott's 'Electric Star' and a Geissler tube of unusual dimensions... and behind the figure is the curtained window through which a porte-lumiére transmitted sunlight for his spectroscopic researches." Part of Biographical notice of Pres't Henry Morton, PH. D., a biographical account of Henry Morton (1836-1902), written to accompany the presentation of this portrait of Morton to the Stevens Institute of Technology trustees. He was a prominent scientist in Philadelphia, and his accomplishments included the founding of the Philadelphia Dental College, editing the Franklin Institute Journal, and conducting research on "Fluorescent and Absorption Spectra of the Uranium Salts." The volume consists of three sections: a biographical sketch of Morton's life, a description of his research, and a selection of his poems.
