貝聿銘在東海校園規劃案定案前，雖曾前往日本桂離宮走一趟，而被認為校長辦公室的造形是脫胎自桂離宮。但是也有人認為貝氏所受的訓練與擅長的手法仍是現代主義。前往日本考察，只不過是尋求在東方的傳統中可資套用的模子。他的觀念仍不脫離西方的範疇，東方傳統的素材只是用來點綴罷了。所以說東海大學的校長辦公室與其說是脫胎自日本的桂離宮，倒不如說是貝氏把柯比意的薩伏耶別墅改得像桂離宮，因為就平面的處理來看，它們的脈絡的確很相近。(以上取自東海大學的官網http://thugo.thu.edu.tw/chinese/04_school/02_detail.php?sdid=13)
