Description
English: Presentation of the Samuel P. Langley Medal for Aerodromics to Admiral Richard E. Byrd at the Smithsonian Institution on March 27, 1931. Left to Right: Secretary Charles Greeley Abbot, Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes, and Admiral Richard E. Byrd. The Langley Medal is in honor of Secretary Langley, third Secretary of the Smithsonian (1887-1906), and pioneer in the field of aerial navigation. Byrd was awarded the medal for his pioneer flights over the North and South Poles, his nonstop flight over the Atlantic Ocean, and for the application of the science of Aerodromics to geographical exploration
