This operation is continued until all the basinson both sides of the ditch are flooded. The most convenient means ofchecking the flow in both kinds of ditches is by canvas dams (p. 64). Another way of applying water to basins is indicated in figure 22.The water from the supply ditch passes through the basins from topto bottom in a zigzag course due to the position of the gaps in theridges. Only half of the gaps need to be filled before water isadmitted, but those remaining are usually filled immediately after eachbasin is flooded. This method is objected to for the reason that thebasins nearest the supply ditch receive the most water.
