Description

KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (October 26) – Engineers from the Afghan National Army (ANA) and ISAF contingents recently completed training that will allow them to construct and repair bridges in Afghanistan that have been worn out by normal use or damaged by insurgent attacks.

The Mabey & Johnson (M&J) bridging system allows crews to rapidly repair existing bridges. The metal bridges are built in sections. Most of the work can be done by hand and heavier components are lifted into place by a crane.

Eighteen ANA engineers from across Afghanistan completed the training alongside 30 ISAF engineers. The two-week course covered all aspects of using M&J bridges, from the selection of a bridging site to the construction of a multi-span bridge. Engineers on the course successfully built and disassembled a 24-metre bridge.
