[edit]DescriptionPrediction of the hand translational and rotational velocities from a population of M1 neurons.png |
English: Simultaneous decoding of both translational and rotational movement from a population of 512 movement-modulated motor cortical neurons during the center-out with rotation task. All 446 neurons tuned to hand translation were used to decode 3D hand velocity using a modified population vector algorithm (indirect OLE), and all
326 neurons tuned to hand rotation were used to decode 1D hand rotational velocity with the population vector algorithm. The translational and rotational velocities were integrated to get hand position and orientation. This figure shows the decoding results for eight movements with clock-wise (CW) hand rotation in the frontal plane. Each decoded movement is shown in a different color illustrating its instant 3D hand trajectory and hand orientation in the frontal plane. Position of the color dots represents the instantaneous 3-D hand position. Orientation of the small color vertical lines indicates hand orientation in the frontal plane at four time points: start of movement, 1/3 into movement, 2/3 into movement, and end of movement (length of the small vertical line is arbi trary). At the time points corresponding to start and end of movement, black “+” signs were plotted to indicate the horizontal and vertical directions to facilitate the visualization of hand rotation.
