Summary
[edit]DescriptionPrayer Tower Cathedral COGIC - fmr Trinity Reformed Church - Buffalo, New York - 20221115.jpg |
English: Prayer Tower Cathedral Church of God in Christ, 1079 Kensington Avenue at Freeman Street, Buffalo, New York, November 2022. A typical example of the Late Gothic Revival architectural style common especially in Protestant churches of the early 20th century, the church boasts an unusual corner entrance seen just left of center as well as a repeated motif of wide, moderately pointed Gothic arches that manifests itself in the fenestration, both in the smaller side windows on the west elevation at right and in the large frontal window, divided vertically into three parts by a pair of decorative buttresses. The simple front gable atop the façade is flanked by a pair of modest-scaled octagonal turrets topped with stone lanterns decorated with trefoil formations. Erected in 1923 to a design by Charles W. Bolton, a Boston-based architect whose Buffalo-area work also includes the magnificent Central Park Methodist Church, the building served for the first seven decades of its existence as home of Trinity Reformed Church (later Trinity Evangelical and Reformed Church, and finally Trinity United Church of Christ), a mission congregation established to serve the newly urbanized Kensington-Bailey neighborhood that had recently outgrown its original frame chapel. The building passed into the hands of its current owners after Trinity's 1996 dissolution, a victim of changing neighborhood demographics. |
