Description

Prairie falcons are fairly common during spring and fall migration periods at Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge. We have a few that stick around to nest. This one was harassing a great horned owl on a nest. It streaked past several times, turning a 180 to take another pass at the owl.

The point and shoot instinct kicks in on a photo like this. Almost always the photo(s) turn out blurry or only a small portion of the subject makes it into the frame. I was more ready on this one than most, having increased the shutter speed to 1/2500 of a second, to freeze the motion of the rocket ship, ie. falcon. The camera lens actually locked on and focused on the falcon in the millisecond I had as it streaked past.

Lesson learned, give it a try even if it is not likely to turn out, sometimes it does.
