the proper degree of density. Some-times, however, when very strong contrasts between bonesand muscular tissues are desirable, the development shouldbe interrupted at an earlier stage, and the necessarydensity be produced afterwards by intensification (seebelow). Some investigators use exceedingly weak developers, gradually increasing their strength and continually develop-ing for as long as three hours, with very fine resulting nega-tives, combining a wealth of detail with strong contrasts. Another plan to obtain the best possible result from anexposed plate has been suggested by Mr. B. Larus ; hecommences development with any suitable hydroquinonedeveloper and continues until the outlines show a fairamount of density ; the plate is then removed into a metolpotash or rodinal developer, which brings out the moredelicate details which are often wanting in the otherwise ex-cellent hydroquinone development. These special methodsare not at all necessary when there is fair contrast between

On having decided to stop development, the plate mustbe rinsed in clean water to free it from the developer, andthen placed, film upwards, in the fixing bath : Fixing bath. It is then removed, washed by soaking for anhour in several changes of water, or, better still, in a dishinto which a tap is dribbling ; after this the plate may bestood on edge on a suitable rack to dry spontaneously, ormay be further treated by intensification when necessary. Double-sided films and plates are rather more difficultto manipulate, as it is necessary, at least d
