Powst-Medieval Coin: defaced Threepence of Elizabeth I
Description
English: Silver Coin. Threepence of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), as identified by finder, dated 1572. This coin has been defaced with a crudely incised cross over the obverse bust; given the date, this was possibly as an act of religious dissent on the part of a contemporary recusant.

Obverse description: Bust left, rose behind head.

Obverse inscription: [--]D[--]AN[--]

Reverse description: Shield of Arms, long cross, date over shield.

Reverse inscription: POSV[--]DEV.AD[---]
