Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Powerhouse of the Fort Augustus Abbey hydro-electric scheme. This is the power house of the first hydro-electric scheme in Scotland to supply electricity to the public. It was built by the monks of Fort Augustus Abbey in 1890 and supplied the Abbey and 800 residents in the village. Water was supplied to the 18kW turbine via an aqueduct. The North of Scotland Hydro-Electricity Board required the closure of the scheme as a condition of the supply of mains electricity to Fort Augustus in 1951.
