Staff Sgt. Shawn Moldenhauer of U.S. Army Africa’s G-4, Logistics, tightens a staked strap on the solar shade at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti. Photo by Rich Bartell, U.S. Army Africa Public Affairs Moldenhauer helped Maj. Tim Franklin who is assigned to U.S. Army Africa and Steve Tucker of the U.S. Army Natick Research, Development and Engineering Center during the initial shakedown stages of a solar shade that uses solar energy to produce two kilowatts of usable energy daily. In spite of gale force winds, sporadic torrential rains and blazing heat, the solar shade continued to function with no repairs and little maintenance required.
