Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sri Annu Iyengar was the foremost trustee (Dharmakartha) for the Oppiliappan Temple, near Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu.

The tradition in many ancient temples in Tamil Nadu including the Oppiliappan temple is that the original image of the presiding deity is made of lime plaster and/or wood and later replaced by a stone idol. Sri Annu Iyengar, while living in Poundarigapuram, re- established the statue of Lord Oppiliappan at this temple by a stone statue (Refer Article – ‘Oppiliappan Temple’), as was blessed by Lord Himself in his dream. In 1919 the idols of Vishnu, Lakshmi and Markandeyar were made of stone due to great efforts of Sri Poundarigapuram Elanagar Madapusi Annu Iyengar. He rebuilt the damaged Raja Gopuram and performed kumbabhishekam in 1926. He also started ‘Panguni Brahmotsavam’ in this temple, that is being celebrated even to this day.

(This is according to Sri Vardachari, Grand son of Sri Annu Iyengar. Reference- ‘Thiruthalaperumai’-an article written by Bharaneedharan in Ananda Vikatan, Tamil Magazine, Chennai)
