Description |
English: Wine pot, covered, stoneware, celadon glaze with incised decoration, probably form Chola Namdo province kiln and a royal court rejected item due to overheating in kiln on one side, most likely from Kangjin kiln, superb galze, incised peony pattern with lotus. This melon-shaped ewer, probably from the Kangjin-gun kiln in the Chŏllanam-do province, may have been made for the royal court. It shows a darkened glaze on one side due to irregularities of the firing in the kiln. The form is clearly inspired by nature, so too are the curling stalks on the lid and handle. These ‘lugs’ or ‘ears’ would have been connected. Each of the facets of the melon shape has an incised peony flower pattern with lotus petals near the rim and the base, which are lightly incised and carved into the clay before the piece was fired and glazed. The delicately incised and carved patterns are barely visible through the translucent glaze. |
