Title |
Postmedieval copper alloy ewer spout |
||
Description |
English: A medieval to postmedieval copper alloy zoomorphic ewer spout. The spout dates from the 15th to 17th centuries, and is likely to be of Flemish or German origin. Ewer spouts of this date were made separately to the body of the ewer, to which they were then welded (Lewis, 1987- see reference below). The front of the spout is in the form of an animal's head with two oval raised ears and two eyes and a snout. A pipe extends from the animal's open mouth, through which liquid would have flowed. The rear of the spout is undecorated and slopes downwards to form a large curved opening, which is where it would have been welded to the ewer body. The spout is very similar in form to a 15th century spout recovered from the moat of Cardiff Castle, (Lewis, 1987). |
