Summary
[edit]DescriptionPostcardRailroadPlaceSouthNorwalkCT1909.jpg |
English: Postcard: Railroad Place, South Norwalk, Connecticut, postmarked 1909
Description: "undivided back / used 1909" according to an eBay store Web page. The view is toward the northeast. Railroad Place no longer exists, and not one building that was on it exists, or any building in this picture save one — the tiniest. On the viewer's far right side is a small building with a conical top. The building, which has a triangular "footprint" remains (as of 2007) at the corner of Washington Street and North Main Street (as can be seen in this picture. The eastern end of Madison Street now exists about where the northern end of Railroad Avenue was (although the intersection with Washington Street has been moved considerably to the left, and a "vest pocket" park is located between the bicyclist in the picture and the tiny building with the tower). The railroad bridge over North Main Street and Washington Street (which existed at the time of this postcard) is just to the right of the scene shown in the picture. The large building in the postcard was a hotel, and an extension of the tall 50 Washington Street building now stands in its place (although considerably farther back from the corner). Klaff's store, a local landmark, is near the corner to the left (on the southwest corner of Madison and Washington streets), in a newer building. The South Norwalk railroad station was once on Railroad Place. |
