Title
Post medieval headress pin
Description
English: Fragment of a 16th - 17th century silver head-dress pin, of the 'bodkin type'. The fragment includes the ear scoop end and part of the shaft; it has broken at the start of the rectangular slot. The scoop is circular, slightly bent upwards, 6.3mm in diameter and 1.9mm deep. The scoop is attached to the pointed end of a drop shaped section of shaft. The section has a flat front and back and sides beveled from the front and the back; it is 7.8mm long, 4.9mm wide and 1.9mm thick with a central circular piercing 2.5mm in diameter. There is a 2.2mm long line incised from the hole towards the scoop. The hole shows signs of wear, especially on the back. After the drop shaped section the shaft narrows in a collar 1.5mm long with a central band and deep incisions either side. Beyond the collar the shaft is rectangular in profile, flat front and back with sides again beveled from front and back. This section is 11.15 mm long, 5.5mm wide and 2.5mm thick. It is decorated with two lines running across the shaft at the end opposite the collar; from these lines seven thin lines run down the length of the shaft. The middle line is longest (5.6mm) and the outer lines shortest (1.7mm). This decoration is repeated on both the front and back. Beyond the incised lines is the start of a rectangular slot 1.8mm wide cutting through the shaft. The shaft has broken at about the start of this slot with only small stubs of the sides remaining. Discussion: In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. A very similar head-dress pin of 'bodkin type' was reported as Treasure in 2004. Treasure case 2004 T206. See Treasure Annual Report 2004, p121, fig: 244.
