Description
English: 16th century silver gilt dress pin with heavy spherical head, decorated with applied filgree ornament on two hemispheres joined by a plain band c.1mm wide.

The head is c.15mm in diameter. Each hemisphere has five circles surrounding a central cinq-foil, each containing a quatrefoil. At the centre of each foil and top and bottom between each foil is a knop. At the centre of the cinq-foil, the knop is slightly larger (except in the case of the cinq-foil on the underside, where the shank of the pin extends). Some knops are missing through wear.

The pin head is gilded but the gilding has worn off the knops so they are now silver.

The shank of the pin is 2.7mm in diameter where it extends from the head. It is slightly damaged and a little bent, narrowing towards the point, which is 1.4mm in diameter. The shank would originally have been c.52mm in length.

The dress pin weighs 6.53g.
