Title
Post medieval S-shaped fastener strap fitting
Description
English: A copper alloy S-shaped belt fastener in the form of a snake. The loop at the tail end is bent and expanded. The snake is finely detailed with scales extending over the entire fastener, and clearly defined eyes and mouth. The fastener is 39mm long, 19.9mm wide, and 3.83mm thick. The metal is in good condition and is a dark brown colour with light corrosion products trapped between the scales of the snake. Snake fasteners were popular in the sixteenth century and then fell out of favour until the end of the eighteenth century (Bailey, Detector Finds 3, 1997). This example is probably from the earlier period.
