Title
Post medieval: Incomplete double looped oval 'spectacle' buckle frame
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy double looped oval (spectacle) buckle frame of Post Medieval dating (AD 1550 to AD 1650).

Approximately 50% of the buckle frame is present. The pin and the buckle plate are missing, presumed lost in antiquity.

The buckle frame is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with a slight integrally cast central bar to which a pin would have been attached. The pin is lost but would have been attached to the central bar by the terminal being folded back upon itself. There is no evidence for a recessed pin rest on the frame. At the mid point of the loop on the surviving edge is a relatively crude cast flower or rosette. A triangular knop is present at either end of the strap bar. The decoration is limited to the upper face and the reverse is plain and undecorated. There is slight evidence of an applied surface present, consisting of a grey black coloured surface is present on some edges.

The buckle measures 25.79 mm in length, 22.06 mm wide and 2.42 mm thick. It weighs 3.1 g.

The buckle is a mid green colour with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement while within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

Similar examples to this buckle can be seen in Whitehead (1996, page 66) as #407. Whitehead has dated these to the Early Post Medieval Period (c. AD 1550 to c. AD 1650).
