Title
Post medieval: Complete chape from sub rectangular buckle frame
Description
English: A complete copper alloy chape, from a shoe buckle of Post Medieval dating (c. AD 1690 to c. AD 1720).

The frame is sub-trapezoidal in plan and has concave sides and a very slightly convex outside edge. It has a sub-rectangular slot to take the missing pin. Parts of an iron spindle have survived in each section of the bar. The chape frame has an internal spike.

It measures 19.6 mm in length, 26.8 mm wide and 3.1 mm thick. It weighs 2.6 g.

The chape is a light to mid green colour, with an uneven patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the ploughsoil, has resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.

A buckle with a similar chape is illustrated in Whitehead 1996, p.103, ref. 662. Whitehead suggests a date c. 1690-1720 for this type of chape. Several similar buckles and chapes have been recorded on the PAS database, including: IOW-62c000; SUSS-F7A8D4; SWYOR-7BE727; NLM-576C81; YORYM-2DEE43; ESS-CFF1C3.
