Title
Post Medieval skillet handle
Description
English: A Post Medieval cast copper alloy vessel handle, probably from a posnet or skillet. The handle is rough cast and has a flat top and roughly-filed convex curved underside giving it a "D" shaped cross section. It is sub-rectangular in plan. Just short of one end the width is stepped-in equally from both sides, forming a shouldered end. The opposite end finishes in an angled chamfer, set at approximately 25 degrees to the vertical. Starting at the chamfered end the upper surface of the handle has the raised letters "MAR" roughly moulded into the surface, with the "A" being barred. There is a raised border around the edge of the upper surface. The handle is grey-green in colour and has mottled blackened deposits over parts of its surface including on the chamfered end, perhaps suggesting this end is not a break. This implies the stepped end was attached to the rest of the handle or directly to the vessel. KENT-AFB625 shows a similar handle. The Finds Research Group, Datasheet 41; p4; suggests that examples with inscriptions, in the form of mottoes or the maker's name, are of Post Medieval date. The barred "A" suggests however that this example may date towards the earlier part of the Post Medieval date range.
