Title |
Post Medieval silver dress-pin |
||
Description |
English: The object is a silver bodkin-type dress-pin with slot and perforation (eye) at one end, and tapering to a point at the other end. The shaft has a flattened quadrangular cross-section with bevelled edges, and is undecorated. On one face, below the slot, is a stamped hallmark .W.
The pin is bent, and has not received any conservation. Length overall 109.2mm; maximum width 3.8mm; maximum thickness 2mm; weight 6.47g.
This type of object is now generally recognised as a bodkin of seventeenth-century date. Similar finds from have been made at Clavering, Essex (TAR 2004, no. 245), Chilcomb, Hampshire (TAR 2004, no. 246), Hougham, Kent (TAR 2004, no. 247), and Mattishall, Norfolk (TAR 2004, no. 248); Buckingham, Buckinghamshire (TAR 2005-6, no. 575), Ivinghoe area, Buckinghamshire (TAR 2005-6, no. 576), Newent, Gloucestershire (TAR 2006, no. 277), Redbourn, Hertfordshire (TAR 2005-6, no. 578) and Heckington, Lincolnshire (TAR 2005-6, no. 579). These have all been dated to the seventeenth century. A silver dress-pin of this type was found at St Athan, Vale of Glamorgan, in 2011 (Treasure ref. no. 12.1). Bodkins of this type were popular in the Low Countries, and appear in household inventories as well as on female portraits (eg Baart et al 1977, 217-9, where they are dated to the early seventeenth century). Examples in Britain have not been restricted to Norfolk and Suffolk, examples being reports from across England from Gloucestershire (TAR 2005-6, no. 577) up to Lincolnshire (TAR 2005-6, no. 579). |
