Post Medieval silver-gilt 'Fede' finger ring |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a silver-gilt 'Fede' or gimmal finger ring. Due to its fragmentry nature, this ring cannot be reliably dated. They were very popular in the Victorian era and this example is probably Post Medieval (17th to 19th century AD). However fede rings do go back to the 14th or 15th century, originating in Italy. The gilding on the ring appears to be confined to the pair of clasped hands which are typical of this type of ring. Known as 'fede' rings, from the Italian for 'hands in faith' ('mani in fede'). Rings with clasped hands were given as tokens of love, usually engagement or marriage, from Roman to modern times. For medieval examples see SUR-8507E2, BH-D4E091, YORYM-144AE4, KENT-853D17, and there are many others on the database. The length is 20mm, and the width is 8mm. |
