Title
Post Medieval seal
Description
English: A cast lead Russian hemp seal dating from the late Post-Medieval period, dated 1858. The seal is sub-oval in shape and has a pair of parallel holes running through its width (bulla style). Each side bears an inscription in moulded relief within a circular border. The letters and numbers on seals denote the grade or quality of the flax, hemp, or tow; the name of the quality control inspector, the port of dispatch, and the initials of the grower/owner/agent; the date refers to the date of grading. This seal has a length of 29.52mm, a width of 27.35mm, and a thickness of 5.66mm. It weighs 25.45g.

We are very grateful to Ged Dodd of the Peacehavens project for his help in transcribing and identifying this seal. He notes:

'Obverse :- АРХ.БРА (Archangel Bracked)
ДECЯTH, (inspector) / АЛЕKСЕИ ЧУМАКОВЪ (ALEKSEI CHUMAKOV)
Reverse :- APX. БP / КУДЕЛЪH / 1:COPTЪ / E.П. / 1858
Archangel Bracked 1 SORT KUDEL'N (which is the coarse broken part of flax after the Heckling and Scutching processes, in 1858.
The Grower/Owner/Agent initials are E.П. (E.P.)'
