Title |
Post Medieval nutcrackers |
|||
Description |
English: A pair of Post Medieval copper alloy nut crackers. The object is in very good condition with a green patina. The object consists of two identical parts hinged together at the top. The upper part is made up of two solid plates which are sub semi-circular in section, having three flat areas which are incised with foliate decoration on the middle panel, and punched annulets and crescents forming a chain on the outer panels. The inside surface has four lines of triangular nicks designed to hold the nut in place. Below this is an ornately turned area 20mm long before the 'handles' emerge. These form an oval space between them and are D shaped in section. They widen out towards their the centre before tapering in again and terminating with turned out points. There are the initials "TB" stamped on the inside of one handle; either the maker's mark or the owner's initials probably. These are a very good example of their type. Compare LVPL-EDF472, LEIC-E45056 and HAMP3159. |
