Title
Post Medieval head-dress pin
Description
English: Part of a Post Medieval silver head-dress pin of a type previously known as a bodkin, dating from the 17th century. The pin is broken at both ends. It is rectangular in section and has a rectangular slot throuigh the surviving part. The slot is 14.1mm long and 1.6mm wide. The slot is in a rectangular field which is decorated with groupos of three diagonal incised lines. This decoration is repeated on the other face. This area is flanked by a transverse band, and then a quatrefoil shaped area which is decorated with circular stamps. there is one punch on each lobe and one in the centre, on each quatrefoil, and on both faces. At one end the break is across the remains of another aperture which was probably circular. Compare NMS-98C5C2 and NMS-991DE0.

LEIC-E2E758 notes that: "Margeson (1993:8) writes that these have previously been called 'bodkins' which is a term generally assumed to relate to needlework. The term applies both to needlework and to head-dress or hair pins. The above type of pin was used as head-dress ornaments in the Low Countries in the first quarter of the 17th century. It is thought they were brought to England by immigrants."
