Title |
Post Medieval ewer spout. |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper-alloy zoomorphic spout from a 15th-century pedestal-base ewer. In profile it forms a curvaceous shape, with a terminal in the shape of a dog's head. The mouth of the dog is wide open, with an integral short tube protruding. The snout is slightly moulded on the upper surface which is slightly narrowed. The underside of the snout is undecorated. The head is slightly angular, with a sub-rectangular ear on each side of the head; the ears protrude upwards above the crown of the head. Behind the head the spout curves downwards, but this portion of the spout is open and forms a semi-cylinder rather than a tube. The surface of the spout has a pitted dark green/brown patina on the exterior. The length of the spout from the tubular terminal to the apex of the semi-cylinder portion is 63.84mm, and the width across the head is 18.07mm. It weighs 64.5g.
Lewis (1987, fig. 8A) illustrates a very similar dog's head spout and dates them to the 15th century. They were fixed to pedestal-base ewers, but are normally now found detached. |
