Title
Post Medieval copper alloy S-shaped clasp
Description
English: A Post Medieval copper alloy S-shaped clasp (mid 16th - early 17th century). This clasp has been cast s-shape with a central multiply knopped band with foliate fringe to both sides, from which a longtidinally grooved neck with a dragon-headed terminal emerges. The moulding is on both faces. One loop of the s-shape is larger than the other.

A very similar parallel is illustrated in Egan (2005:47) no. 172, however that example is incomplete with one dragon-headed terminal missing.

Egan (2005:47) notes "An accomplished accessory in Renaissance style. There are relatively few parallels, suggesting a brief vogue for the use of this type of belt connector (before a fairly recent revival); presumable mid 16th - early 17th century...where parallels in contemporary Frisian paintings from the 1540s to 1620s are noted in men's costume."

Dimensions: length: 30.67mm; width: 17.70mm; thickness: 4.65mm; weight: 7.22 g.
