Title |
Post Medieval cloth seal or token b(front and reverse) |
||
Description |
English: A cast lead alloy possible cloth seal or token of Post-medieval date, circa (AD 1600-1800). The object is sub-circular in plan. If the lead alloy object is a cloth seal it would have probably comprised of 2 disks and a connecting strip. These are now missing, leaving one disk remaining. There is a small area on the edge of the object where the patina is abraded, this could be where the connecting strip was damaged and broken in the plough soil. Alternatively the object could be a token. The front face has a raised motif within a circle; due to wear it is difficult to distinguish the design. The reverse is undecorated. The object has a cream coloured patina across all surfaces.
Saunders (2001:figs 19-27) shows a wide variety of cloth seals with numerous marks which were put on commercially produced cloths as part of a system of industrial regulation. The token measures 18.44mm diameter, is 3.64mm thick and weighs 6.6 grams Saunders, P. (2001) Medieval Catalogue part 3. Salisbury, Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum. |
