Title
Post Medieval bodkin
Description
English: A fragment of a silver Post Medieval dress pin; only one terminal end survives. This terminal has a circular ear scoop at its tip (the end is bent) and then a perforated circular hole with a groove extending from the hole along the centre of the shaft towards the scoop on both faces. Below this is a moulded collar - the sides of the rectangular sectioned shaft are indented above and below the plain collar and there are corresponding grooves across the faces. Next is a decorated area of shaft. It has a curved line across the top with triangular incisions depending from it, and from the lower end are longitudinal lines, the centre one longest and decreasing in length towards the sides. This pattern is repeated on the reverse. The dress pin is broken across the top of the rectangular slot and is bent at this point too.

This dress pin is similar to other more complete examples also reported via the Treasure Act, for example one from Lidlington, Bedfordshire (2004 T206) (Treasure Annual Report 2004, no 244, p 121). It can also be compared to 2011 T318 and 2011 T393.

Length: 27.1 mm; Width: 5.79 mm; Thickness: 2.53 mm; Weight: 2.09 g

Date from: Circa AD 1500 to circa AD 1700

In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
