Title
Post Medieval apothecary weight (front and reverse)
Description
English: A copper-alloy apothecary weight, of probable Post-Medieval to modern date. The weight is square in plan and rectangular in cross section. The obverse face depicts the letters 'Z and R'. The R has a pellet at the end of each foot. The reverse face is stamped with a single 'R' which also has the pellets at each foot. The surface is fairly abraded so it is possible that other stamped letters are no longer visible. The weight has a dark green to brown patina. The earliest copper-alloy apothecary weights were made from square pieces of copper-alloy, stamped with traditional symbols for the number of drachms. Biggs (1992:p8) shows similar brass weight examples with traditional symbols.

This apothecary weight measures 11.1mm in length, 10.1mm in width, 2.2mm in thickness, 1.5g in weight.
