Title
Post Medieval Spectacle Buckle front
Description
English: A fragment from a cast copper alloy buckle dated to the Post Medieval period (c.1600-1720).

The fragment is from a double loop spectacle buckle, consisting of the side of one loop and a short section of bar. The fragment indicates the buckle had trefoil (debased fleur-de-lis) sides with trefoil mouldings at either end of the strap bar. The outer edge of the loop is missing, but there may well have been a trefoil knop. The bar has a flat back, and a rounded front, creating a wide, shallow, D shape in cross-section. The strap bar is narrowed.

The buckle is redish brown in colour, with a developing patches of dark green patina. There are flecks of tinning on both sides.

Weight 1.36g

Length of fragment 21.9mm, width of fragment 18.3mm, thickness 1.8mm.

A good parallel can be seen in Whitehead (p71 no 444) who dates these to the 17th and very early 18th centuries.
