Title
Post Medieval Socket Candlestick (front)
Description
English: The object is a candlestick socket. The socket is tubular, it is circular in section, and has straight sides. The upper rim is slightly abraded. The base of the socket, in profile is triangular, or conical, however the base of the socket is missing, instead there is narrowed circular hole with a broken edge. This broken edge is not a recent break. The exterior of the socket is decorated with fine horizontal grooves, there are a pair in the centre, one below the rim and a fourth above the base. Finally there is a fifth above the lower narrowed broken edge.

The surface of the socket has a patchy shiny dark green patina. Some abrasion and corrosion has taken place. It measures 37.73mm tall, and 22.96mm diameter. It weighs 35.71g.

The socket is possibly from a Bunsen type (as described by Brownsword in Brownsword, R. 1985 English Latten Candlesticks 1400-1700 Finds Research Group Datasheet 1) which date to the to the late 15th and early 16th centuries (Brownsword).
