Description
English: One complete half of a cast copper alloy probable Post Medieval dress hook, dating to the 16th-17th century AD.

The mount is sub circular in plan, with a integrally cast projecting hook on one side. It would have originally been one of a pair, with its partner having an integrally cast loop to recieve the hook. The decoration on the front consists of a crescent moon, with traces of a human face present (i.e. eye, nose, mouth), looking towards a six pointed star. The hook extends from the star. The back of the mount is plain and undecorated with two integrally cast mount spikes. Traces of a darker shinier coating are visible on the reverse and it is possible that this is lacquering. The mount is mid green to dark brown in colour with an abraded surface patina. It measures approximately 40 mm long, 22.6 mm wide, 1.8 mm thick and weighs 5.3.

These mounts are thought to represent the Man in the Moon, and are possibly from a sword bell or baldrick. An published example is present in Read 2008, p. 224, no. 805 and has been dated to c.16th-17th Centuries AD. Several similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database either as mounts or strap fittings as WMID-7A35E5, HAMP-1C48B4, SUSS-2E08A5, NMS-26F8C0.
