Post Medieval Buckle |

Description |
English: Incomplete Post Medieval double loop buckle. Cast in copper alloy, the buckle has traces of silvering adhering to the upper surface. The buckle has an offset central bar, with part of the corroded iron pin looped around it. There are semi-circular facets along the edge of the frame. The outer edges of both loops expanded, forming trapezoid shaped loops. Both outer edges contain a moulded lions head which is convex in profile. The reverse of the brooch has two concave circles corresponding to the reverse of the lion's heads. On the upper surface, there is a small amount of punched decoration either side of both lions heads. The buckle has a dull dark grey-green patina. Other examples of this buckle type include HAMP2795, IOW-3C6B17 and NARC-95AC22, which give an 18th century date for this buckle type. These buckles apparently have a naval or military significance, being found on HMS Innocence (from the second half of the 18th century), and in Spanish colonial military occupation sites in America, dating 1808 to 1814. |
