Title
Post Medieval Bodkin
Description
English: TREASURE ITEM 2011 T498: Complete but bent and broken silver bodkin (head-dress pin). The overall shape of the bodkin is sub-rectangular in section, with slightly convex sides, and tapers gently from the terminal towards the point. The terminal is in the form of a small bowl-shaped earscoop. The shaft immediately below this terminal is sub-oval with a central circular perforation. Radiating from the top of this hole towards the earscoop, on both faces, is a short incised groove. Below this segment the shaft has moulded decoration consisting of a raised ridge running around the shaft with a groove to the top and bottom. The shaft has no further moulding but has incised decoration on both faces covering approximately half of the remaining shaft. The incised decoration consists of chevrons, stylised flowers and simple lines. There is a rectangular hole through this decorated part of the shaft surrounded by dashed line decoration. The initials DW are incised, on one face, at the point where the incised decoration comes to an end.

This bodkin has been dated to the seventeenth century, c.1600-1700.

This bodkin is similar to other examples also reported via the Treasure Act, for example one from Lidlington, Bedfordshire (2004 T206) (Treasure Annual Report 2004, no 244, p 121).
