Title |
Post Medieval Barrel Padlock (Probably) |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a probable cast copper alloy and iron padlock of early post-medieval date. The fragment measures 18.2mm by 20.6mm by 10.4mm and weighs 10.9g. It comprises a broadly cylindrical section with an oval cross-section which has a longitudinal circular-sectioned iron bar through the centre and an S-shaped arm on one side. There is an old break on the other side which may indicate the former presence of a symmetrical arm on the other side. On both front and back there are incised vertical and diagonal lines.
Geoff Egan comments: "I suspect this item is the case of a version of one of a 'barrel' padlocks operated with a slide key, the iron perhaps (and in contrast with many of the others, which are made entirely of copper-alloy) being part of the mechanism. If I am right this is a 'new' version, so dating is for the moment a matter for gut feeling, mine being ?c.16th century." |
