Title
Post Medieval: double looped (spectacle) buckle
Description
English: Complete cast copper alloy double looped (spectacle) buckle of post-medieval date (1550-1650). The frame of the buckle is sub-rectangular (rectangular with angled corners) in plan with a central bar to which the pin (not present) would have fitted. In the centre of the buckle frame, either side of the axis bar, are two small semi-circular cast knops, decorated with radiating lines (forming a scallop or shell). Similar knop-like projections are present on the outer edges of the frame position in the centre of the buckle. Again they are decorated with a scallop design. The buckle measures 49.9mm long, 26.6mm wide and is 2.7mm thick. It weighs 5.67 grams. The buckle is a light - mid green colour with a broken and uneven patina that covers all surfaces. The majority of this patina has been chipped away probably by movement in the soil; this movement has resulted in the buckle becoming asymmetrical. Where the patina has been lost a light grey green corrosion is present. Similar examples to this buckle can be seen in Ross Whitehead's book 'Buckles 1250 - 1800', specifically examples 403-404 page 654.Whitehead suggests that these buckles date from the post medieval period (1550 - 1650) and are used on personal dress.
