Title
Post Medieval: Sub rectangular buckle and chape
Description
English: An incomplete tinned copper alloy sub rectangular buckle and chape, of Post medieval dating (c.1690 to c. 1720).

The buckle is a sub rectangular shoe or knee buckle, with a drilled frame for a separate spindle. The frame has been decorated with three moulded transverse vertical ridges on either side of the spindle hole. An incised foliate design is present on the outer edge of each loop. The chape is incomplete. The pin is missing. Iron staining is present on the reverse of the buckle, suggesting that the spindle may have been made from iron.

The buckle is a mid grey colour, with an even surface patina.

The buckle measures 34.38mm in length, 27.23mm wide and 5.42mm thick. It weighs 7.6 grams.

A similar example has been published as #655 by Whitehead (2003, 102) and dates to between c.1690 to c. 1720 AD.
