Title
Post Medieval: Spectacle Buckle (incomplete)
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy double looped buckle, of Post Medieval dating (c. AD 1550 to c. AD 1650).

Only one half of the frame is present. The pin, strap plate and the other loop are missing, presumed lost in antiquity. The frame is sub oval in plan, and rectangular in cross section. The outer loops are both expanded to a point, on which is a moulded rosette. Sub triangular knops are present at either end of the central strap bar. A small amount of iron corrosion is present on the strap bar and the moulded rosette, indicating that the remnants of an iron pin are still present, wrapped around it. The back is flat and no decoration present.

It measures 25.4 mm in length, 28.7 mm wide and 2.7 mm thick. It weighs 3.6 g.

The buckle frame is a mid green to brown colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

This buckle is similar to that depicted as #410 by Whitehead (1996, p.66) and is consistent with an early Post Medieval date (c. AD 1550 to c. AD 1650).
