Title
Post Medieval: Incomplete double looped (spectacle) buckle
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy oval shaped buckle frame, of Post Medieval dating (AD 1660 to AD 1720).

Only the frame is present; the pin, spindle and chape are missing, presumed lost in antiquity.

The frame of the buckle is oval in plan with two central drilled holes to which an incomplete iron spindle / axis bar is fixed. The pin / chape which would have fitted to this bar is also missing. In profile the frame is slightly bowed. There is no evidence for a pin rest on the frame and there is no decoration on the frame either.

The frame measures 23.6 mm in length, 19.7 mm wide and 3.6 mm thick. It weighs 3.8 g.

The buckle frame is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina.

Similar examples tof this buckle frame have been published as no 600-601 in Whitehead 1996, p97. Whitehead suggests that these date from the post medieval period (1660-1720) and were used as shoe or knee buckles. Several similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database including: YORYM-B8CB35; YORYM-B8DA36; IOW-E61917; IOW-73A575; and HESH-FAFC76.
