Title
Post Medieval: Incomplete double looped (spectacle) buckle
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy double looped sub oval buckle, of Post Medieval dating (AD 1600 to AD 1720).

Around 60% of the buckle frame is present, the rest is missing, presumed lost in antiquity. The pin is incomplete. The strap plate is missing. The buckle frame is double looped (spectacle) and sub oval in shape. It has a narrowed strap bar. A trilobed trefoil knop with an engraved rosette is present on the outer edge of the surviving loop and a trefoil moulding remains at the end of the strap bar. Iron corrosion is present wrapped around the strap bar, indicating that the pin had been made from iron and the remnants were still present.

It measures 32.6 mm in length, 29.0 mm wide and 2.6 mm thick. It weighs 3.8 g.

The buckle frame is a mid green colour, with an even surface patina.

Similar examples are illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 71) such as no 444 and are dated to circa AD 1600 - AD 1720. Similar buckle frames have been recorded on the PAS database and include YORYM-A2D861.
