Title |
Post Medieval: Asymmetrical buckle |
||
Description |
English: A complete cast copper alloy double looped asymmetrical buckle, of Early Post Medieval dating (c.1575 - c.1700 AD). Only the frame is present, the pin and buckle plate are missing. The buckle is asymmetrical in shape. It exhibits six lobed knops (quite worn) on the ouside edge of the rectangular loop. Two lobed semi circular knops are present at symmetrical points on the outer edge of the sub circular loop. A lobed rectangular knop is present at either end of the strap bar. The buckle is a mid to dark green colour, with a slightly abraded patina covering the surface. Patches of surface tinning are present. The buckle measures 24.36mm in length, 18.98mm wide and 2.25mm thick. It weighs 2.8 grams. This buckle is similar in style to those classified as double loop asymmetrical buckles by Whitehead (2003, p.91, #577), Whitehead has dated this style of buckle to the Early Post Medieval period (c.1575 - c. 1700 AD).
