Title |
Post-medieval spindle whorl |
||
Description |
English: A complete, but mis-cast lead spindle whorl of late medieval to post-medieval date (c. AD 1400-1750).
The whorl is biconical with a filled central perforation (approx. 11mm), likely the result of a problem in the casting process. One face is decorated with 7-8 pellets, while the other side features a design of lines in a 'zig-zag' or star pattern around the circumference, with pellets in the gaps. The object has a white patina with some brown patches, and has some superficial damage on both faces. Though this object could not have been used as a spindle whorl, it shows evidence of wear and may have been repurposed as a weight. Diameter: 29.2mm, weight: 49.52g. |
