Title |
Post-medieval spectacle buckle and plate |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy double-loop spectacle buckle and shield-shaped plate with moulded foliate decoration, cast in a sunken field, on the upper face of the plate and buckle frame. The surviving loop has an expanded side and the plate is unrecessed with tapering sides and trilobate end. The plate has two rivet holes in each side and one part of an iron rivet survives in one of the four holes. Around the moulded motifs are patches of black material which are probably the remains of red enamel, used to emphasise the foliage in relief. The pin is missing.
The frame is 25 mm long, 28.7 mm wide and 2 mm thick, and the plate is 32 mm long, 16 mm wide and 1 mm thick. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 68, No.423, which is dated to c.1550-1650. |
