Title
Post-medieval seal matrix
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy and glass paste seal matrix, probably from a swivel fob seal dating from the early modern period, that is the 19th century. The matrix consists of an oval thin, fragile copper-alloy frame with a thick dark blue intaglio made from dark blue glass paste. The frame shows two small holes which is where it was fastened into the semi-circular swivel frame. The semi-circular frame would have been attached to a long chain.

The glass intaglio displays an impression on both sides: one side displays the initials IM in mirror-writing, surrounded by a floral design while the reverse displays an oval shield with a chevron between three fleur-de-lys. The oval shield is surrounded by a floral border which is unknown in heraldry. After some research, a an exact match could not be found; in fact a chevron between three fleur-de-lys appears to be a common design so the owner of this matrix may have chosen it according to personal preference rather than his or her family's heritage.
