Post-medieval s-shaped strap fitting |
||
Description |
English: A complete but damaged copper-alloy S-shaped belt hook fastener of post-medieval date. Each end of the fastener terminates in a moulded swan's head, represented bifacially. These have beak, eyes and feathers all delineated. The object then narrows from each head before expanding again towards the centre of the body of the animal. At the centre is a band decorated by longitudinal incisions. Emerging from the band on both sides and on both faces are foliate devices with central stems. Beyond these is a group of delicate curves. One of the ends has been bent outwards and also sideways slightly. The object has a red-brown colouring with some lighter areas of corrosion product. A wide post-medieval date range has been offered for this artefact; perhaps a later date within this range is more plausible given the intricacy of the decoration. |
