Title
Post-medieval pot leg
Description
English: The leg from a cast, copper alloy cooking pot or similar vessel of the medieval period, dating to approximately AD 1250-1600. It is broadly D-shaped in section. The back is flat, smooth and undecorated, while the lower front part of the leg flares out to form a flat, standing surface with three broad, concave facets, giving the impression of an animal's foot, either toed or clawed. These grooved facets continue up the remaining length of the leg forming two distinct ridges. The top of the leg is flat and undamaged. The left side of the leg, when laid flat, curves slightly to the right, while the left side is s shaped, likely part of the original casting. The leg has a light green and grey patina over the whole surface.

Length 60.5mm, width 28.5mm, thickness 19.9mm, weight 91.88g.

Medieval pot legs similar to this type have been catalogued by Egan (1998, pp. 164-166) and the two most closely comparable with this example (nos. 457 and 460) have been dated to Ceramic Phases 11 and 12, AD 1350-1450. According to Geake (2001, PASStaff Finds Recording Guide), cooking vessels such as this were used from AD1250 - 1600.
