Title |
Post-medieval pocket sundial (profile 1, plan, profile 2) |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper-alloy pocket sundial. Post-medieval, c. 16th-17th century. Mass: 12.3mm; length: 45.9mm; width: 30.3mm; depth: 11.2mm; thickness: 1.8mm. The object consists of a slightly flattened ring. There is a deep median groove running around approximately two-thirds of the outside, which becomes a slit for the remaining third of the circumference. Transverse to the groove/slot there are two circular holes through the ring, and there are further grooves around the inside and outside of the ring. Numbers relating to the time are stamped in the inside of the ring. Outside there are a series of letters. These are largely unclear due to surface condition, but are likely to relate to the time of year (see Bailey, 1993, “Detector Finds 2, figure 1, p.8). The outer rotating ring is missing and there is a split in the inner ring by the slot. |
